UK summons Chinese Charge d’Affaires following China’s sanctions

By Caribbean News Global fav

LONDON, England – Charge d’Affaires Yang Xiaoguang was summoned to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) following China’s sanctioning of nine British individuals and four entities.

Background

The Charge d’affaires was summoned due to China not currently having an ambassador in London following the end of the previous incumbent’s tenure

FCDO

A FCDO spokesperson said: “[Today] March 26, the Chinese Charge d’Affaires, Yang Xiaoguang, was summoned to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. Minister for Asia, Nigel Adams MP, made clear Beijing’s decision to impose sanctions on British individuals and entities is unwarranted and unacceptable.

“The minister noted that China has chosen to sanction individuals and entities that are seeking to shine a light on human rights violations and that today’s actions would not distract attention away from those very violations taking place in Xinjiang.”

Foreign secretary’s statement

In a press release March 26, foreign secretary Dominic Raab, said: “It speaks volumes that, while the UK joins the international community in sanctioning those responsible for human rights abuses, the Chinese government sanctions its critics. If Beijing want to credibly rebut claims of human rights abuses in Xinjiang, it should allow the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights full access to verify the truth.”
