OAS deploys EOM for general elections in Paraguay

WASHINGTON, USA – The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) began its deployment in Paraguay for the National and Departmental Elections on April 30, in which the president and vice president of the Republic, senators, deputies, and governors will be elected, among other authorities.

The Mission, headed by former United States ambassador to the OAS Luis Lauredo, is made up of 60 specialists and observers of 18 nationalities and is monitoring key aspects of the process such as electoral organization, technology and justice, voting abroad, the political participation of women, political financing, campaigns and freedom of expression, as well as political participation of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

Over the next few days, the members of the Mission will meet with electoral and government authorities, political leaders and representatives of civil society and the accredited international community, which will allow them to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the process.

At the end of its observation and after the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations to help strengthen the electoral processes in Paraguay.

This is the 16 time that the OAS has deployed a Mission to observe electoral processes in Paraguayan territory and it is made possible thanks to financial contributions from Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, Italy, the Netherlands, Panama, and Peru.
