ST GEORGE’S, Grenada – The High Commission of Canada is pleased to announce contributions totalling CAD 139,900 to two Grenadian organizations through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). The projects, implemented by the Grenada Community Development Agency, Inc., (GRENCODA) and the Belmont Foundation, will strengthen community safety and expand economic opportunities across Grenada.
Through a CAD 90,000 CFLI contribution, GRENCODA will implement the Building Safer Communities – Community-Based Crime Prevention project to strengthen community-based approaches to crime prevention across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Working closely with the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), the Legal Aid and Counselling Clinic (LACC), local businesses and other community partners, the initiative will support at-risk youth, strengthen community policing and neighbourhood safety initiatives, and build local capacity to prevent and respond to crime.
The project will also promote collaboration between communities and law enforcement and support the development of community policing tools and resources adapted from Canadian best practices. By fostering community engagement and prevention-focused approaches, the project aims to reduce vulnerability to crime, strengthen public trust, and build safer and more resilient communities across the tri-island state.
Canada is also contributing CAD 49,900 to the Belmont Foundation for the Island Futures Lab: Building Green Livelihoods for Youth and Women project. The initiative will equip 30 unemployed and vulnerable women and youth with practical training in climate-resilient agriculture, food safety, agro-processing, entrepreneurship, and digital skills. Participants will also receive business and financial literacy training, and support to develop and market value-added agricultural products. By strengthening green and digital skills, the project will help participants create sustainable livelihoods while supporting climate-smart agricultural practices and rural economic development.
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives is a program designed to support small-scale, high-impact projects that address local needs and advance Canada’s international priorities. Through the 2026–2027 CFLI cycle, the High Commission of Canada in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean is supporting initiatives that contribute to peace and security, growth that works for everyone, and climate resilience across the region.
The projects in Grenada reflect Canada’s commitment to addressing the underlying drivers of insecurity while creating opportunities for inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
High Commissioner of Canada to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, H.E. Brenda Wills, shared:
“Canada is proud to partner with Grenadian organisations that are creating safer communities and expanding opportunities for those who need it most. By investing in community-led crime prevention, entrepreneurship, and climate-resilient livelihoods, these projects support Canada’s commitment to peace and security, growth that works for everyone, and stronger, more resilient communities across Grenada.”
