OAS – TSE of the Dominican Republic to strengthen women’s political participation

USA / Dominican Republic – The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of the Dominican Republic yesterday signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen the political participation of women.

OAS secretary-general Luis Almagro said that this agreement will facilitate the design of a plan of action that will contribute to the guarantee of conditions for full political participation of Dominican women.

“The OAS General Secretariat formed the high-level group for the strengthening of women’s political participation at the beginning of 2022. The Dominican Republic is the first country to open its doors to this initiative, which seeks to articulate the implementation of recommendations of the Electoral Observation Missions in this matter,” added secretary-general Almagro.

Meanwhile, the president of the Superior Electoral Tribunal of the Dominican Republic, Ygnacio Camacho, said that the initiative seeks to contribute to the fight against “inequality against women”.

“The OAS, through the department for electoral cooperation and observation, will assist in the formulation of proposals so that our high court can continue to strengthen actions in the area of the gender perspective,” said the head of the Dominican TSE.

The agreement was reached after a visit in May to the Dominican Republic of the high-level group for the strengthening of women’s political participation headed by the former president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla. This initiative is supported by the Inter-American Commission of Women and financed by Canada.
