OAS deploys Electoral Observation Mission in Suriname

WASHINGTON, USA – The Organization of American States (OAS) begun the deployment of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to observe the 2025 General Elections in Suriname.

The OAS/EOM, headed by Chilean economist, International Relations expert and former OAS director of external relations and executive secretary of the Summit of the Americas process Irene Klinger, comprises 28 experts and observers from 15 countries. The Mission will focus its observation on electoral organization, electoral technology, political-electoral financing, electoral justice, women’s political participation and Indigenous peoples’ participation.

Ahead of the polls, the chief of mission and the OAS observer team will meet with the electoral authorities, representatives of political parties, government officials, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to discuss perspectives on the ongoing electoral process. On election day, members of the Mission will visit polling stations from the opening of the polls to the counting of votes and the processing of results.

In the days after the election, the OAS/EOM will present its Preliminary Report containing observations and recommendations seeking to strengthen the democratic and electoral processes in the country.

This OAS Electoral Mission has been made possible thanks to the financial contributions of Canada, Colombia, France, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Peru, and the United States.
