Head of OAS Electoral Mission arrives in Ecuador to observe the August 20 elections

WASHINGTON, USA – The head of the Electoral Observation Mission (MOE) of the Organization of American States (OAS) for elections in Ecuador, former vice president and foreign minister of Panama Isabel de Saint Malo, arrived in the country to begin work on the early presidential and legislative elections and popular consultations: Yasuní and Chocó Andino, which will be held on August 20.

This is the fifth time that de Saint Malo has served as head of an OAS Electoral Observation Mission. Previously, she led Missions in the first and second rounds of Ecuador (2021) and Costa Rica (2022).

The OAS Mission is made up of 81 experts and observers from more than 20 countries, who will analyze issues related to electoral organization and telematic voting, electoral technology, electoral justice, political financing, political participation of women, indigenous peoples, and Afro-descendants, and political-electoral violence.

The EOM/OAS will meet with government representatives, electoral authorities, political leaders and candidates, scholars, representatives of civil society, and members of the international community to learn about the electoral process in the country. On election day, the Mission will be deployed in 20 provinces of Ecuador to observe the process from the opening of the voting centers to the transmission of the results.

This is the 25th Mission that the OAS has deployed in Ecuador, and it is made possible thanks to financial contributions from Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Panama, and Peru
.
After the elections, the Mission will present a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations.
