Dear Members
Have you ever wondered what lessons an internationally-recognized journalist has learned about journalism, and themselves, after covering conflict zones for more than 30 years?
Or how about learning from a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist about the simple techniques you can use for reporting compelling stories on traditionally dry matters, all within deadline?
At #CAJ22 you can indulge your curiosities. Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent, and Jacqui Banaszynski are just two of the marquee names who will be joining us later this month in Montreal.
As CAJ members you are entitled to a preferential rate and discounts for traveling to the conference. So why wait? There’s literally something for everyone.
Sessions include:
- A workshop by software developer and digital security trainer Rowen S. on how to communicate safely and securely with sources.
- How to balance stress, trauma and self-care strategies on the job. This discussion will be hosted by CBC journalist Dave Seglins and Carleton University professor Matthew Pearson, who are leading the national Taking Care survey in Canada. You will also hear from Kelsie Kilawna, from IndigiNews, about why understanding trauma-informed journalism practices are so crucial.
- A French-only workshop on tricks and tips about gathering information using Freedom of Information requests. This session will be hosted by Marie Christine Trottier and Monique Dumont, two of Quebec’s finest investigative journalists.
- An entire stream devoted to teaching you how to tell compelling data-driven stories. These sessions will be led by wunderkinds David McKie and Valérie Ouellet, along with some special guest speakers.
- A discussion about the role of cartooning and satire in 2022 hosted by the Montreal Gazette’s Terry Mosher aka Aislin and Jacques Goldstyn aka Boris, who are two of Canada’s most celebrated editorial cartoonists.
- Reconnect with your passion for journalism after a long pandemic during an interactive workshop with Nana aba Duncan, associate professor and the inaugural Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication.
Oh, and don’t forget about our swanky Awards Gala and Sunday capstone event.
