ST JOHNS, Antigua – This year, the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) in collaboration with the Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission and Premier Beverages are inviting Antiguans and Barbudans at home and abroad, along with well-wishers, to celebrate Antigua and Barbuda’s 39th Year of Independence on November 1, with the ‘After 5’ daquiri.
Launched, as the official “Independence cocktail” on October 29, ‘After’ 5 is full of Antigua and Barbuda-based flavours.
Crafted as a modern variation of the Old-Fashioned Rum Punch with an Antiguan twist, the cocktail uses English Harbour 5-Year-Old Rum as its base, and includes fresh lime juice, orange bitters and nutmeg. The use of agave nectar is the specialty ingredient taken from the flower of the Dagger Log, which is Antigua and Barbuda’s national flower and adds a wonderful sweetness to the cocktail.
With much of this year’s Independence activities curtailed due to the pandemic, the Tourism Authority is connecting and engaging with nationals and residents of Antigua and Barbuda, the diaspora and visitors around the globe by way of this celebratory drink, which can also be enjoyed without the rum.
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority’s Social Media team hosted a Facebook LIVE demonstration of the ‘After 5’ cocktail featuring Calbert Francis, Global Export Manager at Premier Beverages.
Jacqueline Thomas, owner, and chef at the Villas at Sunset Lane created local saltfish cakes with an Antiguan black pineapple dip as the perfect appetizer to be paired with the cocktail.
All are encouraged to try the cocktail and appetizer recipes at home. Patrons can also request the ‘After 5’ at various bars and restaurants across the island during the Independence weekend and long after.
