BASSETERRE, St Kitts – Political Leader of the opposition St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Dr Terrance Drew has called for another protest march against embattled prime minister Dr Timothy Harris.
Labelled “March for (the) Restoration of Democracy,” on July 15, 2022, is the second protest to be staged in the streets of Basseterre in the past three weeks.
“Wear your national colours and let us march to protect our Democracy from Timothy Harris, who is trying to illegally extend the constitutional deadline for holding the elections. All patriots of St Kitts and Nevis are welcome,” said Dr Drew, the SKNLP political leader.
A flyer promoting the event on Friday called for an end to Harris’ “dictatorship,” “schools not prison” and “no more (Covid-19) travel restrictions.”
Support for the march has come from political activist Duncan “Big Lice” Wattley.
“People of St Kitts and Nevis let’s all go out and March today 15 July at 3 pm. Our democracy is under threat. We can’t be silent anymore,” said Wattley who also called supporters of the SKNLP, the PAM, CCM, NRP and PLP to join the protest.
Dr Drew and several candidates seeking to become parliamentary representatives in the new lawmaking body will lead the demonstration which leaves the Greenlands Park at 3: p.m.
The first demonstration earlier this month attracted thousands of protesters as Kittitians and Nevis called for the setting of a date for fresh general elections after months of public in-fighting in the three-party coalition led to the dismissal of six cabinet ministers.
The dissolution of St Kitts and Nevis National Assembly on May 10, 2022, came one year and eleven months into the second five-year term of the Team Unity Government headed by prime minister Dr Timothy Harris, political leader of the two-seat People’s Labour Party (PLP), the four-seat People’s Action Movement (PAM), led by deputy prime minister Shawn Richards and the three-seat headed e three-seat Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) headed by minister of foreign affairs, Mark Brantley. Brantley and two CCM ministers and Richards and two PAM ministers were sacked from the cabinet.
With the dissolution of the National Assembly the election of new representatives must be held within 90 days.
