By Government Press Office | BELIZE

BELMOPAN, Belize – The government of Belize hosted a historic visit to Belize by H.E. Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party and president of the Republic of Cuba on February 12, 2023.

The programme included a special sitting of the National Assembly, a bilateral meeting with H.E. Dame Froyla Tzalam, governor-general of Belize, and prime minister John Briceño. During the meeting, president Díaz-Canel spoke of deeper bilateral cooperation in health, including a medical treatment breakthrough for treating foot lesions arising from diabetes complications.

This historic visit also saw the governments of Belize and Cuba signing two bilateral agreements: a Memorandum of Understanding for the exchange of migratory alerts and security information, and a cultural cooperation agreement.

The high-level delegation from Cuba included H.E. Dra. Lis Cuesta Peraza, wife of the president; H.E. Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, member of the political bureau and minister of foreign affairs; H.E. Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz, minister of foreign trade and foreign investment; and H.E. José Ángel Portal Miranda, minister of public health.

Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their constructive and meaningful relationship and to continuing the collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
