Paraguay assumes chair of OAS Permanent Council

WASHINGTON, USA – The Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the Organization of American States (OAS), Elisa Ruiz Díaz, has assumed the chair of the Permanent Council for the next three months, in a virtual ceremony.

Ambassador Ruiz Díaz stressed that the Organization is a mainstay in the defense of the democratic institutions of the hemisphere. “For Paraguay, the OAS is a valuable tool to ensure democracy and the rule of law,” said the Paraguayan diplomat.

For her part, the Permanent Representative of Panama and outgoing chair of the Permanent Council, María del Carmen Roquebert, said that her term of office had been a productive three months in which the Council had worked well together. “In this period we have promoted inclusive, transparent and frank dialogues, through which we have managed to approve by consensus resolutions on issues of importance to our region,” said ambassador Roquebert.

The Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda, Ronald Sanders, will serve as vice chair of the Council.
