OAS to provide technical support to the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic

WASHINGTON, USA – The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Central Electoral Board (JCE for its Spanish acronym) of the Dominican Republic today signed a technical cooperation agreement for next year’s elections, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

The secretary-general of the OAS, Luis Almagro, recalled that the Dominican Republic is one of the countries that has received the most electoral observation missions from the Organization and congratulated the JCE on its 100th anniversary, “which reflects the commitment of Dominicans to democracy and its institutions.”

“Through this agreement, we will place at the disposal of the board the experience, professionalism and technical capacity of the Department for Electoral Cooperation and Observation of the Secretariat for the strengthening of democracy, to contribute to the strengthening of the electoral body’s capacities,” added secretary-general Almagro.

For his part, the president of the Central Electoral Board of the Dominican Republic, Román Jáquez, recalled that the hemispheric institution and his country have already implemented technical cooperation projects in electoral material with positive results.

In the last two years, the OAS provided technical cooperation to the JCE to implement ISO standards which culminated in the installation of an integrated quality management system and the recommendation of certification in four international ISO standards.

“We are confident that with this initiative we will have satisfactory results. The commitment of the Central Electoral Board is to carry out an electoral process where democracy will be strengthened,” added president Jáquez.

In 2024, the Dominican Republic will hold municipal elections in February, presidential and legislative elections in May and – if necessary – a second round in June.
