USA / GUATEMALA – The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) for Guatemala’s general elections has been constantly monitoring the post-election stage of the elections held on June 25, 2023.
As indicated in its press releases of June 30 and July 2, the Mission considers it vitally important that the will of the people expressed at the polls be respected.
Given the recent resolution of the Constitutional Court ordering the suspension of the assignment of positions, as well as the reconvening of the vote count verification hearings in the Departmental Electoral Boards (Juntas Electorales Departamentales, JED), and within the framework of the agreement signed with the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), the Mission has decided to deploy once more to Guatemala to observe this second verification not included in the original electoral calendar.
For this reason, a technical team composed of observers and specialists in electoral organization and technology will be traveling to Guatemala. The Mission will be present for the new verification process and will continue to gather relevant information in preparation for the second round of the presidential election on August 20.
