WASHINGTON, USA – The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Peru today began its final deployment for the presidential runoff election to be held on Sunday, June 7.
Led by former secretary general of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), Víctor Rico Frontaura, the Mission is composed of 92 specialists and observers from 21 countries. During the direct observation phase, the team will be present in all 24 departments of the country, in the Constitutional Province of Callao, and in four cities abroad.
The OAS/EOM has maintained continuous monitoring of Peru’s electoral process and, as part of this work, conducted a technical visit in mid-May. For the runoff election, the Mission continues to observe key aspects such as electoral organisation and technology, electoral justice, campaigns, and the media and digital communications environment. It will also meet with electoral and government authorities, candidates, political leaders, and representatives of civil society and the international community to continue gathering information on the ongoing process.
The OAS Mission reiterates its call on the electoral authorities of Peru’s electoral system, as well as political and social actors, to conduct the process with a strong sense of democratic responsibility, avoiding confrontations, threats, or rhetoric that could generate social division.
Following the runoff election, the OAS/EOM will present a new report containing its observations and recommendations aimed at strengthening future electoral processes in the country. This marks the 25th time that the OAS has deployed an Electoral Observation Mission in Peru and is made possible through the financial support of Brazil, Canada, Spain, the United States, France, Italy, Morocco, and Switzerland.
