Intellectual property expert transforming the creative industries

CASTRIES, St Lucia – Kimani F. Goddard, a Saint Lucian, is significantly impacting the world of intellectual property law and policy.

With over a decade of experience as a senior consulting IP advisor for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), this dynamic expert is using her skills to drive change in the creative industries and beyond. It is, therefore, no surprise that Goddard will be the guest speaker at the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Collective Organisation for Music Rights (ECCO) Inc., scheduled for Saturday, 18 February 2023 at Harbor Club.

A former public relations manager of the Saint Lucia Tourist Board, Goddard is a true leader in her field with a range of key policy projects to her name. Perhaps most notably, she played a critical role in developing the WIPO Guidelines on Assessing the Economic, Social, and Cultural Impact of Copyright Law in the Creative Industries (Economy). With this ground-breaking work, Goddard has helped shape the future of copyright law and provided a roadmap for the transformation of the creative industries into a competitive trade sector for all stakeholders.

Her skills and expertise have earned her a place among the WIPO Academy Experts group, and she has previously worked as the senior policy advisor with the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC). In this role, Goddard has made significant contributions to European Union copyright reform efforts and has helped to shape the future of copyright law.

Beyond her work with WIPO and CISAC, Goddard has also made an impact in other parts of the world. She has served as an intellectual property and international law lecturer at Prince Mohammed bin Fahd University in Saudi Arabia and has advised law firms on copyright issues in the region. In addition, she is a non-resident fellow of the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland, where she focuses on intellectual property, international investment law, and digital trade issues.

Goddard is not just an expert in the field of intellectual property law and policy – she is also a researcher and academic. Currently, she is a PhD Fellow and Researcher at the Maastricht University Faculty of Law, where she is using her expertise to explore the intersection of intellectual property and international investment agreements. Her work focuses on the role of networks of explicit and implicit intellectual property clauses in international investment and free trade agreements, and she is helping to lay the foundation for a new era of international intellectual property law.

Goddard’s research interests are wide-ranging, and she is passionate about the future of global intangible property norms and their impact on international trade and investment. As a member of the Maastricht University Law & Technology Lab, she is working on AI & Intellectual Property Rights, and is exploring the implications for intellectual property rights in personal and biological data.

Goddard’s impressive career and commitment to shaping the future of intellectual property law and policy make her a true leader in her field. Her upcoming speech at the 12th Annual general meeting of ECCO is sure to be a must-attend event for all ECCO members and anyone interested in the future of the creative industries.

In her talk, “The Importance of Collective Management and Copyright in Transforming Music and the Creative Industries into a Competitive Trade Sector for All Stakeholders,” Goddard will share her insights and expertise on the role of intellectual property in shaping the future of the creative industries.
