Canadian – Australian business leaders highlight global market opportunities

OTTAWA, Canada – Mary Ng, minister of small business, export promotion and international trade, met with members of the Business Council of Canada and the Business Council of Australia, as well as with chief executive offfices’ from Canadian and Australian companies, to discuss ways both countries can continue to support businesses as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and create long-term growth.

“Canada and Australia have a long and storied history when it comes to trade. Minister Tehan and I are dedicated to seeing this relationship grow through new ideas, collaborations, and business opportunities that will benefit Canadians and Australians alike. Hearing directly from our business leaders about the issues they face and the support they need to succeed in the global marketplace is the best way to find real solutions and drive real results,” said, minister Ng.

Helping Canada’s businesses collaborate and access new markets is key to driving economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister Ng was joined by Dan Tehan, Australia’s minister for trade, tourism and investment; Mark Glauser, High Commissioner of Canada in Australia; and Natasha Smith, Australia’s High Commissioner to Canada, to identify new opportunities for businesses and governments to work together to facilitate commercial relationships.

Minister Ng delivered opening remarks at the event, highlighting her commitment to increasing cooperation between Canada and Australia. She said this includes fostering sector-to-sector collaborations and shared goals on growing trade in the Indo-Pacific, and the need to continue working hand in hand to support rules-based international trade in the months and years to come.

The round table comes a month after the first meeting of the Canada-Australia Trade Ministers Dialogue, a standing set of trade talks with the goal of building on a shared commitment to deepen Canada and Australia’s strong bilateral relationship.
