Belize: Project pipeline and concept note development for the coastal zone and fisheries sector

By Government Press Office | BELIZE

BELMOPAN, Belize – The government of Belize, through the Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representative for Jamaica, The Bahamas and Belize and Belize’s National Designated Authority to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), is hosting a two-day workshop to develop a roadmap for the coastal zone and fisheries sector.

The workshop is part of the GCF readiness project entitled “Enhancing Adaptation Planning and Increasing Climate Resilience in the Coastal Zone and Fisheries Sector of Belize”. The readiness project has developed various outputs to respond to the challenges within the coastal zone and fisheries sector in addressing the impacts of climate change.

Through a consultative approach with key sector stakeholders, the readiness project has aligned national priorities, strategies, and plans to develop a concept note to strengthen the resilience of the sector. Another major aim is to reduce the climate vulnerability of groups and sub-populations in Belize that are most vulnerable to climate impacts.

The development of the concept note will incorporate the different outputs of the readiness project to support a project pipeline document for the coastal zone and fisheries sector, with a focus on vulnerability, livelihood assessment, and national adaptation priorities. All proposed projects in the project pipeline document will be aligned to Belize’s country programme for engagement with the GCF and will include clear outputs and activities that will engage both the public and private sectors.

The relevant sector stakeholders will validate the project pipeline document and select one project for submission to the GCF for funding consideration. The development of the concept note will be paired with capacity development for the relevant stakeholders in project proposal development.
