A new approach to addressing the crime crisis in St Lucia

Dear Sir

Like the rest of the nation, we in the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) are shocked by the image of a dead body of a young woman discovered over the weekend. We would first like to offer our condolences to the family for this tragic loss.

We are encouraging Saint Lucians to be more empathetic towards family and friends and desist from sharing and posting such graphic images now and in the future. Our efforts should always be to provide any relevant information that may result in the identification and prosecution of the perpetrators; so we encourage anyone with such information to contact the police immediately.

Sadly, based on the murder rate, the crime situation in Saint Lucia is getting worse and worse. Last year, Saint Lucia saw the second-highest number of murders, only eclipsed by the 2017 figure. At the end of 2020, deputy commissioner Desir reported that domestic violence was up. People are feeling more insecure at their homes. None of us are immune to crime.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party believes that there is a need for a new approach to addressing the crime crisis in this country; one that begins with providing opportunities for our young people – educational opportunities to enhance their skills, support for young entrepreneurs wanting to start businesses, support for farmers looking to get started and grow their businesses and jobs programmes.

It also means supporting our police and providing them with new technology to help fight all criminal activity.

Join us in making that change.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP)
