World Intellectual Property Day – Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity

By GIS

CASTRIES, St Lucia – The Registry of Companies and Intellectual Property (ROCIP) of the attorney general’s chambers joins the world in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, 2023. This annual event aims to raise awareness of the role of intellectual property rights in encouraging innovation and creativity.

This year, World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated under the theme: “Women and IP: Accelerating Innovating and Creativity”.

The theme focuses on the contribution of women around the world to creativity and innovation through their imagination, ingenuity and hard work amid significant challenges in accessing the knowledge, skill, resources and support they need to thrive.

World IP Day 2023 provides an opportunity for women in all regions to gain inspiration from women who are driving scientific breakthroughs, setting new creative trends, building businesses and transforming our world. However, there are notable hurdles to women’s progress. Two few women are participating in the intellectual property (IP) system which means that too few women are benefitting from IP.

The ROCIP is, therefore, capitalizing on World IP Day 2023 to encourage more women to use the IP system to protect and add value to their work.

By doing so, we hope to:

  • Develop more and better technologies that work for everyone;
  • Establish more thriving women-led businesses; and,
  • Support economic recovery and rebuild a better economy.

“We recognize the ground-breaking achievements of Julien Alfred, female Saint Lucian sprinter and will honour her with a token of recognition on April 26 for her achievements, not just in sport but more so for her contribution to IP as a vibrant, hardworking and creative woman.”

ROCIP will also host an open day featuring women’s groups which will provide information to the public on the role of IP and in particular, on avenues available to women to exploit the IP system.

We wish Saint Lucia and the world a Happy World Intellectual Property Day!
