St Lucia’s 12th-parliament called to session

CASTRIES, St Lucia – The first session of the 12th-parliament of Saint Lucia is scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 10:00 and the Senate at11:00 am where the respective members will affirm their oath of allegiance and/or affirmation as members of parliament and to the Queen.

Thereafter, both Houses will meet in a joint session to receive a message from His Excellency, the deputy to the Governor-General, Errol Charles.

On July 26, the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) came into power with a 13-2 majority, plus two labour leaning independents to complete a 15-2 majority in parliament. Philip J Pierre was subsequently sworn in as Saint Lucia’s prime minister on July 28, 2021.

Prime minister Pierre, in turn, established a Cabinet of minister on August 5, 2021, as referenced in the Extraordinary Gazette Monday 16th August, 2021 (1).

The Extraordinary Gazette Monday 16th August, 2021 (1) also listed the Senate appointments as published herewith.

Government Senators

His Excellency the Deputy Governor-General has been pleased to appoint
the following persons as Senators pursuant to Section 24(2)(a) of the
Constitution of Saint Lucia:

• Dr Pauline Antoine-Prospere
• Guibion Ferdinand
• Alvina Reynolds
• Stanley Felix
• Lisa Cassandra Jawahir
• Kaygianna Toussaint – Charley

His Excellency the Deputy Governor-General has been pleased to appoint
the following persons as Senators pursuant to Sections 24(2)(b) and 24(2)(c)
of the Constitution of Saint Lucia: Section 24(2)(b)

Opposition Senators 

Dominic Fedee
Herod Stanislaus
Angelina Phera Polius

Independent Senators

It is widely speculated and a closely held secret that the Speaker of the House is Claudius Francis and Stanley Felix President of the Senate.

A note from the office of the clerk of parliament reads: “In keeping with the protocols established by the authorities for management of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis and with a view to ensuring that there are established protocols, members of the public will NOT be allowed in the Chamber Gallery during the Sittings.
