WASHINGTON, USA – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Albert Ramdin, urged Permanent Observers to the Organization to strengthen their cooperation to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Americas, during a meeting that took place today at the OAS headquarters in Washington DC.
During the meeting that brought together more than 46 permanent observers accredited to the OAS, Secretary General Ramdin also provided an update on developments surrounding the recently launched OAS Roadmap for Stability and Peace in Haiti, emphasizing that “Time is critical in Haiti, especially when it comes to security. The ultimate goal—shared by all—is to see Haiti reach the point where it can safeguard its own people, govern effectively, and deliver essential social and economic services without external support.”
The meeting included presentations by OAS authorities on projects involving the four pillars of the Organization: democracy, security, human rights, and development. On the Haiti Roadmap, representatives of observer countries exchanged views with the Secretary General on issues of coordination, financing, and next steps.
The Roadmap is a hemispheric proposal to support Haiti that seeks to link immediate stabilization with long-term structural reforms. It is conceived as a flexible and dynamic framework that draws on Haitian leadership and close coordination with regional and international partners, reflecting Haiti’s priorities and leadership, with the support of the OAS, CARICOM, the United Nations, inter-American institutions, and other partners.
Secretary General Ramdin will hold meetings with Haitian leaders in the coming days to discuss the plan, which emphasizes transparency, urgency of action, and coordination among international actors.
The status of Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States was established in 1971. Permanent Observers participate in the Organization’s activities and contribute to its programs. The OAS currently has 76 Permanent Observers.
