ENGLAND / ST KITTS – During the Caribbean anti-corruption conference in St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Roger Koranteng was recognised for his work on tackling corruption across the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth secretariat’s adviser and head of public service governance, Dr Roger Koranteng, was presented with an award in recognition for his commitment and work in the fight against corruption across the Commonwealth, and in particular, within the Commonwealth Caribbean.
He was presented the award at the conclusion of the 8th Caribbean Anti-Corruption Conference St Kitts and Nevis, where he was also commended for establishing a vibrant and important network of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
On receiving his award, Dr Koranteng, said:
“It is such a great honour to receive this recognition acknowledging the work I have done. This award is dedicated to each person in this room – we are all in this fight against corruption together. So, I want to say thank you all, and most importantly to the Secretary-General for her guidance and support, and for her steadfast commitment to combatting corruption across the Commonwealth.”
On learning of Dr Koranteng’s award, the Commonwealth secretary-general, Patricia Scotland QC, who has made the fight against corruption a key priority at the Secretariat said:
“Warmest congratulations to Dr Koranteng on this significant award, which rightly recognises his outstanding work, commitment and passion in the fight against corruption. He has been a clear, skilled and consistent leader for the Secretariat and the whole Commonwealth. We are all immensely grateful to Dr Koranteng for his work and service to our family of nations. Long may that service continue.”
A career dedicated to the anti-corruption movement
During his tenure at the Secretariat, which spans more than a decade, Dr Koranteng has been working on governance and corruption issues. And in that time, he has established networks of anti-corruption agencies as well as regional training centres in Commonwealth Africa and the Caribbean that promote inter-agency collaboration and capacity-building, development of regional anti-corruption initiatives, and sharing of knowledge and best practices between countries.
In 2011, he led the Commonwealth Secretariat in establishing the Association of Anti-Corruption Institutions in Commonwealth Africa. In 2015, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Association of Integrity Commissions and Anti-Corruption Bodies in the Commonwealth Caribbean.
In 2013, he established the Commonwealth Africa Anti-Corruption Centre in Botswana. Similarly, in 2015, he partnered with the Grenada Integrity Commission to establish the Regional Training Centre of Excellence in Grenada for the Caribbean region.
In 2018, he was presented with the prestigious International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award for his outstanding contribution to the prevention and fight against corruption in both Commonwealth and non-Commonwealth countries.
Since joining the Commonwealth Secretariat, Dr Koranteng has organised and delivered numerous senior-level executive seminars and capacity-development training programmes in governance, management, and anti-corruption efforts in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific.
Dr Koranteng, who is also an associate professor, is an established researcher and author. His latest book, Combatting Corruption in the Commonwealth Caribbean, was recently launched in St Kitts and Nevis. It highlights the success stories of six countries in the Caribbean that have made significant progress in combatting corruption.
