Canada – Bangladesh celebrates 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations

OTTAWA, Canada – Mélanie Joly, minister of foreign affairs, and Harjit S. Sajjan, minister of international development and minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, today issued the following statement:

“Today, Canada and Bangladesh are proud to mark the 50thanniversary of diplomatic relations between our two nations.

“Fifty years ago today, following the end of Bangladesh’s War of Independence, Canada was one of the first countries to officially recognize the independent state of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, marking the start of our long and successful relationship.

“Since then, Bangladesh has made exceptional progress in economic growth, poverty reduction and other key development indicators. Bangladesh is rapidly approaching ‘graduation’ from the UN’s Least Developed Countries list, a remarkable achievement.

“Throughout that period Canada has been a steadfast partner in Bangladesh’s development. We have contributed over $4 billion to supporting Bangladesh’s growth, including in the key areas of access to primary education, skills for youth, maternal and child health, and women’s economic empowerment.

“At this important milestone, we reflect on the successes and evolution of our relationship that includes growing trade relations and strong people-to-people links. We take pride in the thriving Bangladeshi-Canadian community, which makes significant contributions to Canadian society.

“On this important date, Canada extends its deep appreciation to Bangladesh for its generosity in hosting over 1 million Rohingya refugees. We share a common resolve to find an enduring solution and an inclusive, peaceful and secure future for the Rohingya.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, we extend our best wishes to the people of Bangladesh.”
