Canada announces expansion of diplomatic relations with Rwanda

CANADA / RWANDA – Mélanie Joly, minister of foreign affairs, announced Canada’s intention to further strengthen its diplomatic relationship with Rwanda by converting the Canadian office in Kigali into a high commission.

Canada will be increasing its diplomatic capacity to help promote its diverse partnerships with Rwanda and the broad range of our shared interests and cooperation within multilateral organizations, such as La Francophonie and the Commonwealth. With complex peace and security challenges around the world, Canada is committed to increase its support for regional efforts.

Minister Joly also announced that Canada is establishing a dedicated mission and permanent observer to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which will enable Canada to bring a renewed focus to its relationship with the African Union and strengthen ongoing efforts on shared priorities. The expanded representation in Kigali and with the African Union is another mark of Canada’s steadfast commitment to its engagement in Africa.

“Today’s announcement marks Canada’s strong commitment to our engagement in Africa and will reinforce our collaboration with leaders on the continent on joint priorities. Now is the time more than ever to increase our support for regional peace and security,” said minister Joly.
