Canada–Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group
On May 19, Judy Sgro, member of parliament and chair of the Canada–Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, issued a statement supporting Taiwan’s democracy and right to self-determination.
Calling Taiwan “a vibrant, self-governing democracy of 23 million people,” Sgro stated that increasing pressure from China, combined with indications that major powers may discuss Taiwan’s future without Taiwan’s participation, raises serious concerns.
“Let us be direct: the future of Taiwan cannot be decided without Taiwan,” Sgro stated, adding that any attempt to determine Taiwan’s future against the will of its people would represent a setback for democratic values and the principles of a free and just world.
Sgro also emphasised that the Taiwanese people “have done nothing to invite hostility or aggression” and seek only “the right to determine their own future”. She added that any outcome imposed through coercion, threats, or violence would “seriously lack legitimacy.”
Referring to pressure from China, Sgro stated that peace and stability require respect for the will of the governed. Reaffirming Canada’s longstanding commitment to democracy and the rule of law, she also expressed solidarity with the people of Taiwan and support for their right to determine their own future.
