Guyana’s sports infrastructure drive generating economic returns, says minister Jacobs

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (DPI) – The government’s continued investment in sporting infrastructure is delivering economic returns, with hotels in Anna Regina already fully booked ahead of the July 3 opening of the Guyana T10 Tape Ball Blast.

At the launch of the T10 Tape Ball Tournament at the Amazonia Mall on Sunday, minister within the ministry of culture, youth and sport, Stephen Jacobs, said the growing tournament is demonstrating how sports can stimulate local economies by attracting players, officials and supporters.

The minister said government investments are creating new opportunities for businesses in communities hosting major sporting events.

“When we put key infrastructure across the entire country, it is for that particular purpose. You stimulate economic activities, and then you give athletes a chance to upskill themselves,” he said.

The tournament’s final will be staged at the newly developed Anna Regina Stadium in Region Two, a venue that forms part of the government’s wider investment in sports infrastructure across Guyana.

Minister Jacobs said the administration remains committed to supporting community-based sporting events that develop athletic talent as well as generate business opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transportation providers and other local enterprises.

The sports minister added that with Guyana set to host several major international sporting events in the coming months, investments in sports infrastructure will continue to strengthen tourism and economic growth while creating opportunities for communities.
