BASSETERRE, St Kitts – On the eve of an election that is increasingly difficult to win the Dr Timothy Harris led administration is facing another crisis, especially among the people most in need. This is more acute with the Nation Assembly being dissolved Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

Having been told that the government had set aside EC$120 million for a stimulus package that would help Kittitians survive the pandemic, more than 5,000 citizens are waiting, seemingly in vain. These are people who have lost their jobs, laid off, or are on reduced hours as well as owners of small businesses that were forced to close for the past two months as a result of the state of emergency imposed by Dr Harris.
Drawing attention to the plight of the people, St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) deputy political leader, Marcella Liburd confirmed that so far “not one dollar of government funds has gone into the pockets of the people who need it most – our pensioners, our working poor and those who eke out a living as farmers, fishermen as well as the many others who are self-employed and are not registered at Social Security.”
Liburd also confirmed that the EC$5 million that Dr Harris claimed was allocated to the Poverty Alleviation Programme (PAP) is still only reaching the same 4,000 persons who have always received it. Additionally, the EC$30 million that was allocated to mortgage loans and the EC$191 million earmarked for construction projects are also “missing in action”.
Deputy leader Liburd identified the damage the government’s ineptitude is inflicting on the people of the Federation, said, “the ineptitude and incompetence being demonstrated by the Dr Harris administration can do serious long-term damage unless swift action is taken immediately.”
Liburd is hoping that general elections are called quickly so that the NextGen SKN government will correct the wrongs inflicted on the people of St Kitts and NEVIS by the Dr Harris government.
