The Bahamas to host IV meeting on sustainable development

USA / THE BAHAMAS – The IV Inter-American meeting of ministers and high-level authorities on sustainable development will be held in The Bahamas and will focus on the threat of climate change.

The Caribbean country and the OAS General Secretariat signed the agreement on the event today, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington, DC.

OAS secretary-general Luis Almagro stressed that collective action by the region is crucial to address the challenges of climate change and move towards sustainable development.

Addressing ambassador Chet Neymour of The Bahamas, the secretary said:

“Ambassador Neymour, we thank you and your government for organizing this important event. Together we will build a roadmap that will enable countries to achieve their ambitious climate action goals and objectives. The OAS stands ready to support you in this task.”

For his part, the Permanent Representative of The Bahamas said that combating climate change is high on the list of priorities for his country and CARICOM countries.

“The same comparative advantages that the OAS has demonstrated in its work in other spheres regarding to political convening and agenda setting, capacity building and technical assistance, can and must shape the work that the OAS does to advance climate action,” said ambassador Neymour.

The IV Inter-American meeting of ministers and high-level authorities on sustainable development will be held October 2-4 in Nassau.
