- Company partnership creates access to digital payments for Black Point and Staniel Cay residents
EXUMA, The Bahamas – For far too long, residents and business owners in the Exuma Cays have had to leave their homes to receive basic banking services. That reality is changing thanks to a new partnership between SunCash, a leading Bahamian technology company that specializes in financial payments and transfers, and Yntegra Group, the developer of the Rosewood Exuma project proposed for Sampson Cay, Exuma.
This historic initiative creates the first-ever digital payment and ATM access in Black Point and Staniel Cay, transforming how local businesses operate and creating a foundation for long-term economic empowerment in Exuma. Farmer’s Cay is next in line to benefit from this initiative, with the installation of its own ATM scheduled by the end of the year. Yntegra intends to use the SunCash payment system for its payroll processing, enabling employees to receive payments quickly and to have easier and more convenient access to their funds.
According to SunCash director of business development Shawn Smith, 90 – 95 percent of the Exuma Cays population who use banking services are likely to use the SunCash payment system. Smith also noted that the ATMs would enable local businesses to more easily pay their staff and increase sales as payments could be accepted from anywhere in The Bahamas and visitors to the Cays could withdraw cash if needed to make purchases. SunCash also will offer business owners training on the benefits and features of the system, such as instant payment settlement and payroll processing.
SunCash, a licensed financial institution regulated by the Central Bank of The Bahamas, provides access to funds through its digital wallet, which uses the Sand Dollar—the digital version of the Bahamian dollar issued by the central bank. The company currently operates more than 20 ATMs in Abaco, Eleuthera, Cat Island, and Long Island, filling the gaps created by a lack of access to traditional banking services.
“This technology addresses a need that has always existed in many Family Islands. It removes the barriers that prevent hardworking Bahamians from accessing banking services. When employees can receive their payments quickly and local businesses can make more sales, everyone in the community benefits. We operate on every island except Ragged Island, and we have seen the incredible impact of safe and convenient access to banking services across The Bahamas,” said Smith.
In addition to being a local digital payment solution that will support the $200 million Rosewood project, SunCash’s secure payment system will enable residents in the Cays to make deposits and withdrawals and pay government utility bills via ATMs on Staniel Cay and Black Point and a kiosk on Farmer’s Cay. The initiative eliminates the need for business owners and residents to travel to Georgetown, Nassau, and other islands and incur unnecessary costs to access basic banking services that were unavailable in their communities.
