St Joseph’s Convent Steel Pan Orchestra performs at La Port des Arts Festival in Martinique

ST LUCIA / MARTINIQUE – The St Joseph’s Convent Steel Pan Orchestra proudly represented Saint Lucia on the international stage at the renowned La Port des Arts Festival in Martinique on June 29, 2025. This marked a historic first-time appearance for the ensemble at the celebrated cultural festival, and a significant milestone in the continuing growth of cultural exchange between the two neighbouring islands.

This remarkable moment was spearheaded by Shazi Chalon, Saint Lucia’s Cultural Attaché to Martinique, whose tireless advocacy for Saint Lucian arts and culture continues to pave the way for meaningful Caribbean connections. The orchestra’s invitation was further supported by event organizers in Martinique, whose efforts helped lay the foundation for this proud cultural exchange.

The delegation consisted of 20 talented student musicians accompanied by six members of staff, including the school’s Principal, French teacher, Steel Pan coach, and a medical doctor, ensuring the students’ safety, well-being, and academic enrichment throughout the experience.

The students performed a dynamic repertoire that fused Caribbean rhythms with global influences, capturing the hearts of the audience and earning an official invitation to return for the 2026 La Port des Arts Festival.

As relations between Saint Lucia and Martinique continue to evolve, events like these highlight the mutual benefits of cultural exchange — fostering understanding, creating new opportunities for youth development, and strengthening regional bonds.
