Sophie Bayat: One of the youngest to climb Kilimanjaro

By Caribbean News Global fav

DUBAI, UAE – Sophie Bayat, daughter of Sam Bayat of Bayat Group in the UAE, celebrates her maiden journey, climbing the famous summit of Kilimanjaro.

Mount Kilimanjaro is documented as a dormant volcano in Tanzania. It has three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest single free-standing mountain above sea level in the world: 5,895 metres above sea level and about 4,900 metres above its plateau base.

Sophie’s father Sam Bayat, said:

“I like to report that my daughter, Sophie Bayat, made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 meters above sea level, which is the highest free-standing peak in Africa. Located on the volcanic cone Kibo, as part of Mount Kilimanjaro. Reaching Uhuru Peak is the end goal of 20,000 – 35,000 hikers, each year. With beautiful scenic views of Tanzania, Uhuru is a breathtaking hike.”

He added that on 6 February 2023, at 06:57, “Sophie and I, were part of a group of ten that followed the Machame route. We choose this route to have more time to acclimatize to the harsh weather conditions. We set up our camp a bit higher than the Barafu camp.”

Barafu Camp is a campsite on Mount Kilimanjaro, situated at an altitude of 4,673 meters (15,330 feet). It is used as the last camp before climbers attempt the final summit push on the Southern Circuit routes including the Machame, Lemosho, and Umbwe routes.

Sam Bayat revealed that: “On 7 February at 23:30, we started our climb toward the summit and made it to Uhuru peak just before sunrise. Sophie’s main battle was the cold and she did not develop any sign of altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) such as nausea, headaches, or shortness of breath.”

“I believe Sophie is one of the few kids her age to have completed the summit climb and possibly the youngest Canadian girl to climb Kilimanjaro after successfully following the Machame route,” Sophie’s father Sam Bayat, said. “I am proud of my daughter. She has made the entire Bayat family very proud, I must add.”

This is what Sean Burgess, Dubai Guinness record holder had to say:

“Kilimanjaro is a huge physical and mental challenge that requires determination, discipline, and strength of body and mind. To reach the summit as an adult is a big achievement, however for Sophie as an 11-year-old it is an astonishing accomplishment and one very few people her age have achieved. As the team leader, what was most impressive is not just that Sophie summited, but she did so by leading from the front, without any complaining, and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the seven days on the mountain. She’s a truly remarkable young lady and I can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Sam and Sophie’s Bayat journey to Mount Kilimanjaro started on 1 February, when they entered the park at 10:30 am and ended on 7 February. “ This is a trip to remember all our lives,” said Sam Bayat, “a distinguished addition to the Bayat’s repertoire.”
