OAS special mission for the strengthening of democratic institutions in Guatemala begins its visit

GUATEMALA / USA – The special mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the Strengthening of Democratic Institutions in Guatemala will begin its first visit to the country on November 9.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Albert R. Ramdin, announced the deployment of this special mission as a continuation of the OAS Mission deployed in 2024 to observe the selection process for the Supreme Court of Justice, the Courts of Appeals, and other equivalent tribunals.

This Mission, established at the invitation of the government of Guatemala and within the framework of OAS Resolution AG/RES. 2766 (XLIII-O/13) — Promotion and Strengthening of Democracy, will follow up on the selection processes for Magistrates of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Magistrates of the Constitutional Court, the attorney-general, and the Comptroller General of Accounts. It will also promote an inclusive and participatory dialogue with all sectors of society aimed at strengthening democratic institutions.

During its stay, the Mission—composed of experts María Paulina Aguirre Suárez, Marcela Ríos Tobar, and Carlos Ayala Corao—will hold meetings with national authorities, civil society organizations, and other relevant groups to gather information of interest prior to the installation of the Nominating Commissions.

The Mission has opened a communication channel with private institutions, civil society organisations, and the public at large to receive any information considered relevant to its work.
