OAS Observation Mission in Peru highlights guarantees of the post-electoral review process

USA / PERU – The Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Peru continues to monitor the post-electoral phase and reiterates that the official count of the Second Presidential Election is being conducted in accordance with the applicable legal framework.

The OAS/EOM, which was present throughout the national territory and in four cities abroad, reiterates that, with 99.86% of tally sheets processed, it has not identified any irregularities -either within Peru or abroad-  that would have altered the will of the millions of Peruvians who cast their votes on June 7.

The Mission, headed by former Secretary General of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) Víctor Rico Frontaura, recognises the importance of having legal safeguards in place to resolve disputes that may arise during an electoral process. At this stage, it has taken note of the principal annulment requests submitted by both political forces, the decisions issued by the Special Electoral Juries (JEEs), as well as the appeals filed before the National Elections Jury (JNE) and the rulings adopted by that body.

The Mission considers that, at this stage, the electoral runoff has been subject to a thorough review, providing political actors and citizens with full guarantees regarding the results. In this regard, it considers it essential that the remaining challenges be resolved expeditiously, that political actors respect the results, and that the country move forward toward an orderly transition to the new government.

The OAS/EOM will continue to closely follow the official proclamation of the results of the Second Presidential Election.
