OAS General Secretariat on the death of political prisoners in Nicaragua

WASHINGTON, USA – The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) condemns the death of the political prisoner General (r) Hugo Torres detained by the Nicaraguan regime and categorically condemns the persecution and arbitrary detention for political reasons in the country.

The General Secretariat of the OAS considers the fact of keeping political prisoners, with terminal illnesses and without necessary medical assistance, an abominable act, violating their fundamental rights.

Similarly, the General Secretariat demands the immediate release of all political prisoners, a fundamental step towards the re-democratization of the country. Nicaragua needs another path other than repression, persecution, and the systematic violation of the rights of Nicaraguans.
