OAS – EOM on the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio

WASHINGTON, USA – The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) joins in the consternation and grief of the Ecuadorian people at the savage murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio. We strongly condemn this tragic act of violence, which not only attacks individuals, but also undermines institutions and threatens the democratic process.

“We express our sincere condolences to the families of Fernando Villavicencio and of all those affected by this deplorable event. The loss of a human life in such cruel circumstances serves as a somber reminder of the importance of preserving peace and stability in a democratic society,” the OAS press relesae added. “ We call upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation.”

“Likewise, we urge all candidates to strengthen their security measures and call upon the authorities to provide the necessary support to guarantee the integrity of the participants in the electoral process. The security of candidates is fundamental to maintaining confidence in the democratic system and ensuring that the voices of all citizens can be heard freely and without fear.

“The Mission is committed to supporting Ecuador at this challenging time and reaffirms its dedication to the promotion and defense of democratic values in the region. We announce that the first members of the Electoral Observation Mission will be arriving in the country tomorrow, with the aim of collaborating with the authorities and civil society in the preservation of a safe and democratic environment during the electoral process.”
