OAS assistant secretary-general assumes second term

WASHINGTON, USA – The assistant secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Nestor Mendez, assumed his second term Friday during a virtual ceremony.

The assistant secretary-general indicated that the development pillar will occupy a central role in the management of the OAS during the post-pandemic era and highlighted his attunement to secretary-general Luis Almagro to face the immediate challenges.

“Dear friend Luis Almagro, secretary general, I am ready to continue working hand in hand with you and I am sure that our Organization will go ahead, more solid and stronger than ever,” said ambassador Mendez.

For his part, secretary-general Almagro praised the management of ambassador Mendez during his first term and expressed his certainty of continuing to work together for the benefit of the OAS and the region.

“Dear friend Nestor, we have a duty to continue, this has been established and the countries have decided so. We will continue to comply with those that we have proposed to do good to the peoples and countries of the Americas,” added the OAS secretary-general.

Meanwhile, the chair of the permanent council and ambassador of Honduras, Luis Cordero, highlighted ambassador Mendez’s ability to build consensus and wished him good management.

” Assistant secretary-general, dear Nestor, on behalf of the permanent council, I wish you success in the exercise of your functions for the good of the OAS and all its members,” said the Honduran diplomat.

Assistant secretary-general Mendez is a citizen of Belize and his second term will end on July 17, 2025.
