Jamaica: Over $500 million earmarked for tourism-related projects

By Douglas McIntosh

KINGSTON, Jamaica, (JIS) – More than $500 million has been earmarked for work on several tourism-related projects across the island during the 2022/23 fiscal year.

This was disclosed by tourism minister, Edmund Bartlett, during last Tuesdays’ meeting of the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives, which is deliberating the 2022/23 estimates of expenditure.

Bartlett advised that $225 million is programmed for beach development with funds also allocated to carry out work under the Enhanced Highway and Road Attractions projects.

“We’re looking at the Hip Strip expansion development programme for Montego Bay, and a number of infrastructure projects around the resort areas,” he added, noting that there are plans to increase expenditure for Spruce Up Jamaica to $4 million this year.

Meanwhile, approximately $182 million will be spent on activities in Westmoreland.

Bartlett informed that the funds will cover several projects, including work on the road to West End in Negril and a median in the town, as well as engagements relating to the Roaring River attraction.

He said that $125 million is programmed for activities under the Resort Town squatter settlement upgrading programme.
