Generate Capital Launches Integrated Circular Economy Platform, Generate Upcycle, and Announces Acquisition of StormFisher Environmental Services Ltd.

Integrating Generate’s waste-to-value solutions businesses into a single platform enables more comprehensive sustainability and climate solutions, supporting market acceleration

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Generate Capital, PBC, a leading sustainable infrastructure investment and operating platform, today announced the launch of its Generate Upcycle platform to accelerate its growth and expansion in waste-to-value solutions including organic waste, recycling, composting and wastewater treatment. The company also announced it has acquired Ontario-based circular economy and decarbonization solutions developer StormFisher Environmental Services Ltd., adding the company’s organics business, operating and development teams into the newly-integrated Generate Upcycle platform and expanding its development capabilities.

Responding to customer demands to scale circular and zero-waste solutions, Generate Upcycle combines Generate’s existing investment portfolio of North American anaerobic digesters, composting and food waste recovery assets with additional initiatives across biosolids, wastewater treatment, sustainable fuels and nutrient production.

“At Generate, we pride ourselves in doing whatever it takes to accelerate and scale the most critical climate and sustainability solutions. Being creative and bold in building something ourselves had to be on the table given the urgency of the problems we’re trying to solve,” said Scott Jacobs, chief executive and co-founder of Generate. “Generate Upcycle is a significant step that builds on our team’s pioneering track record in the organic waste markets, and with the expertise we have added from StormFisher, we can more comprehensively serve our customers, cities and communities that need more help building the infrastructure that addresses their waste and sustainability objectives.”

Already one of North America’s leading private organics waste processors, Generate Upcycle invests, owns and operates sustainable infrastructure assets in the waste-to-value and circular economy sectors. Across more than 20 facilities in the U.S. and Canada, Generate Upcycle currently processes approximately a half a million tons of food waste annually and composts an additional 365,000 tons of organic waste per year.

Generate first entered the organic waste markets in 2016 and has since built a fleet of anaerobic digesters in New York, Michigan and Canada that divert food waste from landfills and prevent methane from escaping into the atmosphere, while producing clean electricity, renewable natural gas and organic nutrients. Generate Upcycle also owns and operates a national fleet of composting infrastructure through its recent Atlas Organics acquisition.

“I’m thrilled to be launching the Generate Upcycle platform, bringing together our team’s specialized resources, knowledge and expertise, to create a new platform completely dedicated to the multi-billion dollar opportunity in sustainable waste solutions,” said Bill Caesar, president of Generate Upcycle. “To build a sustainable future we need to urgently think differently about waste – working closely with communities to create infrastructure and with businesses to maximize the value of what we’d otherwise be throwing away. Consumers are rightly demanding a world that wastes less and uses materials as part of a circular economy, and Generate Upcycle is exactly the right response at the right time.”

The acquisition of StormFisher brings Canada’s leading waste-to-energy and biogas development team to Generate. StormFisher’s in-house team of project developers and operators have a long track record of leading decarbonization solutions in Canada, across anaerobic digestion, biogas production and RNG upgrading solutions. The StormFisher biogas facility is the largest private organic waste-to-energy biogas facility in Canada, providing food waste recycling services to Ontario’s food processors, retailers and municipalities, turning organic waste into renewable energy and organic fertilizer. Generate and StormFisher have partnered since 2018 to grow the market for sustainable organic waste solutions in Canada, including launching the Drumbo Food Waste Recovery Facility in 2021.

“We’ve had a successful and fruitful partnership with Generate for years, and our team is excited to bring the power of our organizations together to accelerate solutions and better serve customers,” said Brandon Moffatt, Co-Founder and Vice President of Development at StormFisher.
