ROSEAU, Dominica – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has reported continued progress on the construction of the International Airport, describing the project as one of the most significant and transformative investments in the country’s history, reports the OPM pressroom, June 11, 2026.
“Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, the prime minister said works are advancing satisfactorily across multiple components of the project, with major milestones being achieved in earthworks, runway construction and supporting infrastructure.
“Earthworks and culvert construction are now approximately 78 percent complete; runway and taxiway construction has reached 60 percent completion, while significant progress is also being made on the passenger terminal, cargo facility, air traffic control tower, fuel farm and other critical infrastructure,” the government press statement said.
Prime Minister Skerrit also emphasised that all operations are being conducted in accordance with established guidelines.
“I wish to reassure everyone that all activities related to aggregate extraction and processing for the project are being undertaken within the framework of the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Dominica.”
The prime minister noted that the government remains committed to ensuring environmental safeguards are respected throughout the construction process and revealed that approvals were recently granted by the physical planning division for the Stone Field Aggregate Site and the Stone Field Crushing Plant on May 28, 2026.
“I want to reiterate that there is no mining operation taking place and no plans for copper mining or any similar activity. The purpose of the quarry is solely to provide construction aggregate required for the airport project. The government continues to follow the established regulatory processes, including environmental assessments and oversight by the relevant authorities.”
The prime minister underscored the broader economic importance of the international airport project, noting that it is already generating employment opportunities, stimulating economic activity and positioning Dominica for future growth.
“The international airport remains one of the most transformative projects in our nation’s history. It is creating employment, stimulating economic activity and laying the foundation for expanded tourism, trade, investment and opportunity for future generations,” prime minister Skerrit said.
