Belize – United Nations launches two development projects to empower rural communities

BELMOPAN, Belize – The ministry of foreign affairs and foreign trade of Belize, in collaboration with the United Nations resident coordinator’s office, launched two transformative projects aimed at improving the lives of rural communities in Belize. These initiatives are supported by international partners, align with Belize’s ongoing efforts for sustainable development.

With one project funded by the IBSA Fund, a partnership between India, Brazil, and South Africa, and the other supported by the Joint SDG Fund, both being implemented by the United Nations in Belize, they seek to empower rural populations and advance the country’s commitment to universal access to essential services.

The two projects include

1) Deepening Access via Rural Electrification (DARE) – a US$1 million initiative funded by the IBSA Fund to be implemented by UNDP. DARE will provide reliable energy services to underserved communities. This project is a key component of Belize’s National Energy Policy (2023-2040), which seeks to ensure universal access to modern energy services while supporting Belize’s transition to a more sustainable energy system.

2) Driving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) Progress through Solar Energy and WASH Innovations” – a US$250,000 project funded by the Joint SDG Fund to be implemented by UNDP and UNICEF. The project focuses on vulnerable rural communities in Southern Belize and will integrate renewable energy with water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) solutions, which will help boost the well-being of Belize’s most at-risk populations.

The two development projects demonstrate sustainable, inclusive, and equitable energy transition, particularly for the country’s most vulnerable populations. A strong emphasis is also placed on integrating youth and women in the planning and execution of these initiatives, ensuring the voices of all stakeholders are heard.

The official launch of these projects took place Wednesday at the ministry of foreign affairs and foreign trade conference room. This event highlights Belize’s ongoing progress and commitment to achieving its national development goals and reflects the enduring partnership between Belize and the United Nations.
