BRAZIL – As the custodian agency tasked with tracking progress on the global energy goals outlined in the UAE Consensus, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) released in partnership with the COP30 Brazilian presidency, and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA), the second edition of the Delivering on the UAE Consensus: Tracking progress toward tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 during a pre-COP30 high-level event in Brasília.
The report shows global renewable capacity additions reached an unprecedented 582 GW. Yet this is not enough to stay on track to achieve the COP28 UAE Consensus target of tripling renewables to 11.2 TW by 2030. To reach this goal, renewable capacity must now expand by 16.6 percent per year from 2025 onward through the end of the decade.
Another IRENA report was released today at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil. The Regional Energy Transition Outlook South America shows that by accelerating the energy transition, the region could increase its GDP growth by an additional 1.1percent per year over the period 2023 to 2050 compared to current plans, while creating more than 12 million jobs in the energy sector.
