CAF approves USD 300 Million to modernise Colombian airports

COLOMBIA – This operation will support the strategic investments of the Colombian government’s 2025-2030 Plan and will incorporate projects to improve the country’s connectivity, such as the expansion of the Santa Marta and Tolú airports in the Gulf of Morrosquillo, and the technological and radar modernisation throughout the national territory.

“Today is an important day for Colombia and for Santa Marta. With this investment in Colombia’s airport system, we are expanding runways and modernising radars, which will have a direct impact on reducing distances and will increase the capacity to receive tourists and improve Colombia’s connection with the world,” said Sergio Díaz-Granados, executive president of CAF

With this financing, which will be channelled through the Civil Aeronautics Authority (Aerocivil), the National Government will promote the modernisation of Colombia’s airports and guarantee the resources to expand the runway at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Santa Marta, a historic and transformative project for the development of the Caribbean region. This specific project consists of an investment of more than USD 100 million.

Santa Marta Airport is today one of the main air connection points in the Colombian Caribbean. In 2024, it received 3,695,605 passengers. Under the operation of Aerocivil, the airport has undergone a modernisation and expansion process that has transformed its infrastructure to respond to the constant growth in air traffic.

The runway extension is a necessary step to consolidate Santa Marta as a world-class tourist destination and a strategic connectivity point for the Colombian Caribbean. It will allow the operation of larger aircraft, strengthen international routes, attract new investments, and generate greater development opportunities for the region.
