UN agency assists Cuba to boost industrial development

HAVANA, Cuba, (ACN) – The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is managing new projects to contribute to the transformation, development and sustainability of industrial production in Cuba, including the implementation of the circular economy and support for people with disabilities.

UNIDO is currently working on the deployment of eight projects linked to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2030 and bound to guide Cuba’s efforts in the coming years.

According to Marlen Redondo Falcón, an expert with the said programme, since 2023 they have played an active role in the development of this framework, which is expected to contribute innovative ideas to tackle Cuba’s main social, economic, institutional, and environmental problems.

“Strategic sectors such as the biopharmaceutical industry are prioritized with a view to strengthening the country’s production capacity and ensure the availability of necessary equipment for people with disabilities, including hearing aids and wheelchairs,” she remarked. “The energy sector will also benefit from energy efficiency projects, the use of renewable sources, and the provision of technical support to the national power grid. (…) Agriculture was another targeted field with plans to increase food production based on joint cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

UNIDO’s next programme for country partnership will be fully aligned with the new cooperation framework, which ensures the integration of national priorities and the strengthening of partnerships vis-à-vis sustainable development.
