African Union – Brazil strengthen their historic partnership

AFRICA / BRAZIL – Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the African Union Commission, received Brazilian foreign minister Mauro Vieira and agreed to strengthen the partnership between Africa and the South American country.

“We have decided to revive and strengthen the already strong historic partnership between Africa and Brazil in particular and with South America in general,” Mahamat wrote on his social media.

Earlier, Vieira held talks with Ethiopian deputy prime minister and foreign minister Demeke Mekonnen agreed to take bilateral and multilateral diplomatic relations to a higher level. Both sides agreed that now is the right time to strengthen ties, recalling that the reopening of the Addis Ababa embassy in Brasilia this year is aimed at further improving relations.

Mekonnen expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with the South American giant in investment, aviation, tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, environmental protection, mining and energy.

Vieira, who arrived last Monday on an official visit, said Brazil was ready to cooperate with Ethiopia in sports and in various other areas, including multilateral diplomatic forums and bilateral relations.

Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed also received the head of Brazilian diplomacy to discuss issues of mutual interest. The prime minister wrote on his social media page that they discussed strengthening ties between Ethiopia and Brazil, as well as cooperation on multilateral issues.

The Brazilian foreign minister’s visit to Ethiopia is the second since the 2016 visit during the Dilma Rousseff administration (2011-2016), as reported by Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.
