US – Taiwan conclude two days of 21st-Century trade initiatives

NEW YORK, USA – The United States and Taiwan, under the auspices of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO), today concluded two days of productive meetings on the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade in New York City.

During the meetings, the two sides exchanged views on the key concepts to be addressed in several of the trade areas set out in the negotiating mandate for this new initiative, which can be found here.

The mandate envisions the negotiation of high-standard commitments and economically meaningful outcomes covering 11 areas of trade, including trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, anticorruption, small and medium-sized enterprises, agriculture, standards, digital trade, labor, environment, state-owned enterprises, and non-market policies and practices.

The US delegation was led by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), as the designated representative of AIT. Assistant United States Trade Representative Terry McCartin served as the lead USTR official. The US delegation also included representatives from the National Economic Council, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Treasury, the Small Business Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration.

The two sides agreed to hold additional meetings under the auspices of AIT and TECRO in the near future.
