Global Taiwan Institute bipartisan taskforce on US-Taiwan relations convenes session on Taiwan’s security environment

WASHINGTON, USA – On October 18, the members of the Global Taiwan Institute’s Task Force on US-Taiwan Relations met in Washington, DC to continue their work on a comprehensive review of US-Taiwan relations in the 21st Century.

Task Force chair Robert C. O’Brien led the bipartisan group in discussing developments since the July 27 kick-off meeting, noting the urgency of the situation due to China’s increasingly aggressive behaviour towards Taiwan and Xi Jinping’s renewed threats, made during the CCP’s 20th Party Congress, to use force to “annex” Taiwan.

The Task Force also took into consideration the various lessons learned from Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine.

During the session, members reviewed Taiwan’s current military capabilities, defensive strategies, and developed a list of recommendations for Washington and Taipei to work together to ensure Taiwan is prepared to meet, and overcome, any current and future security challenges.

Task Force Members agreed to meet again in late November to continue their comprehensive review of the US-Taiwan relationship.

The Task Force also welcomed a new member, Ivan Kanapathy, former national security council deputy senior director for Asian Affairs.
