OAS Mission begins deployment in Costa Rica ahead of the second round of presidential elections

USA / COSTA RICA – The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the presidential elections in Costa Rica began its deployment to carry out observation tasks corresponding to the second round of elections, which will be held this Sunday, April 3.

The chief of the Mission, the former vice president and former foreign minister of Panama, Isabel de Saint Malo, will arrive in Costa Rican territory Wednesday, March 30, to lead the team of 16 specialists of nine nationalities, who will work both face-to-face and virtually to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the process. In addition to the aspects observed during the first round, the Mission will follow up on issues related to electoral organization, electoral technology, electoral justice, campaigning and freedom of expression.

During its stay in that country, the Mission will meet with electoral and government authorities, political leaders, candidates and representatives of civil society and the accredited diplomatic community in Costa Rica to hear their perspectives on the electoral process.

This will be the seventeenth deployment that the OAS has made to observe electoral processes in Costa Rica.
