Family Works to Set Example by Promoting Awareness and Education for Kidney Health

PHILADELPHIA–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#kidneyhealth–In honor of March being National Kidney Month, a family of six sisters – all involved in the healthcare industry in one way or another – have launched a campaign to share their unique and powerful story of kidney health as a way to promote awareness.

The six sisters, Shari Karpo (a dental hygienist, Philadelphia, PA); Lisa Sparkler (a nurse, Philadelphia, PA); Erica Reisman (a healthcare/insurance professional, Cherry Hill, NJ); Renee Goodman (a physical therapist, Huntingdon Valley, PA); Jennifer Spector (a speech pathologist, Doylestown, PA); and Carla Sparkler (of Mullica Hill, NJ – a chief marketing officer for a specialty pharmacy company), share a passion for helping others.

Eldest sister Shari actually donated one of her kidneys to second eldest sister Lisa, who suffered from chronic kidney disease, when it was discovered that she was the only match in the family.

The family, also passionate crusaders for diabetes education and longtime supporters, volunteers and fundraisers for the JDRF, wanted to expand their public education efforts to include kidney health. The sisters were moved to share their unique and personal kidney story for National Kidney Month, hoping to inspire action on behalf of the 37 million Americans who have kidney disease, also known as chronic kidney disease.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic over the last two years has led to creating more challenges for kidney patients, we felt a sense of urgency in getting our story out to the general public,” explained Carla Sparkler. “Whether you or a loved one suffers from kidney disease or not, it is critically important that more people go online to learn about kidney disease prevention, early detection, treatment, research, and access to transplants, including living organ donation. This is information that saved my sister’s life and hope that our story reaches others so that they become aware.”

“With millions of adults in the U.S. living with kidney disease and another 80 million Americans at risk for developing it, our whole family is dedicated to promoting enhanced education and information about kidney health and screenings,” added Sparkler. “Kidney disease is a largely under-recognized public health crisis. This year, more than ever before, we must emphasize the importance of good kidney health and the unique risk and burden kidney patients face with COVID-19 and its many variants.”

Sparkler and her sisters are urging everyone to visit the National Kidney Month resource website at https://www.kidney.org/content/national-kidney-month to learn how they can help get educated or even involved well beyond National Kidney Month.
