MOFA welcomes Taiwan’s inclusion in US Indo – Pacific Strategy

TAIPEI, (Taiwan Today) – Taiwan’s inclusion in the US government’s Indo-Pacific Strategy released February 11, by the Department of State is welcomed by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said.

Multiple mentions of the country in the important policy document reaffirm US commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, the MOFA said. It further indicates rock-solid ties between the forces for good, the ministry added.

According to the document, China’s coercion and aggression spans the globe, but it is most acute in the Indo-Pacific. To achieve a more free and open region, the US will build coalitions by deepening treaty alliances and strengthening relationships with leading partners such as Taiwan, New Zealand and Singapore.

The US is also set to work with partners inside and outside the Indo-Pacific to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This includes supporting Taiwan’s self-defence capabilities to ensure an environment in which the country’s future is determined in accordance with the wishes and best interests of Taiwan’s people, according to the document.

Taiwan and the US share the commitment to freedom and democracy, the MOFA said, adding that cross-strait peace and stability are in line with the common interests of the US and regional partners.

The government will continue to work with the administration of US president Joe Biden to defend rules-based international order while promoting a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Our gratitude to the #US for highlighting #Taiwan’s role as a leading regional partner in building a free, open, connected, prosperous, resilient and secure #IndoPacific, as well as the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. We’re #StrongerTogether!” (SFC-E)
