Mexico on the rebound

By Swarnali Hannan and Kevin Wiseman

USA / MEXICO – Mexico’s economy is rebounding from its steepest recession in decades. Raising productivity and tackling poverty remain key challenges. Manufacturing and exports are above pre-pandemic levels, services are re-opening, and employment is recovering.

However, the pandemic has taken a severe toll on the country, with over half a million excess deaths. Per capita incomes in Mexico have continued their long-term divergence from the US and poverty has increased even further.

Strong US growth will help demand rebound and presents an opportunity to implement policies to secure the recovery, mitigate the scars of the pandemic, and deliver strong, inclusive growth.
